Daily cleaning keeps things tidy, but it does not reach everything. Here is how to decide how often your premises need a deep clean.
Regular cleaning keeps desks, floors and washrooms presentable day to day. A deep clean goes further: behind and under furniture, high-level dusting, grout, extraction fans, carpets and all the places a daily clean does not have time for.
Employers also have a legal duty to keep workplaces clean. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require workplaces, furniture and fittings to be kept sufficiently clean.
It depends on how the building is used
There is no single right answer, but these are the things that matter most:
- Footfall. A busy reception, shop floor or school needs deep cleaning more often than a quiet office.
- Kitchens and washrooms. These build up grease and limescale fastest and usually need more frequent attention.
- The type of business. Food areas, healthcare settings and childcare need higher standards.
- Carpets and soft furnishings. These hold dust and allergens long after they look clean.
Many businesses book a deep clean every three to six months for busy areas, and at least once a year for the whole building. A good cleaning provider will suggest a schedule after seeing your site.
Signs you are due one
- Lingering smells in kitchens or washrooms
- Dust on high ledges, vents and light fittings
- Stained carpets or grubby grout
- Before an inspection, a reopening or new tenants moving in
